Categories: Selecting effective categories for your directory submission

When submitting your website you must select the primary category from a pull down menu, and then enter 3 categories or tags of your own choice under which your website will be listed.

When selecting the primary category from the menu for your website some care should be taken to select the appropriate category. It is important to note that if you don't feel that your website fits into any of the primary categories, it is probably not appropriate for that directory and should not be submitted!

We have a large number of directories and you may find it would be appropriate in a different directory.

By spending a few minutes entering your categories you can help maximize your website traffic.

Before entering your categories, you should think about what terms people looking for your website may be searching for or thinking about. These are the categories you should use. You are limited to 3, so enter the most important topics.

The best ideas for these categories are:

• Broad categories such as what industry you are in: home decorating, baking, chauffeur services, hotels, fishing etc
• What goods or services you offer: music lessons, carpet cleaning, website design, handmade accessories, car rental etc.

Your 3 categories should NOT be a detailed description of your business or services. DO NOT WRITE LONG PHRASES. Simply pick the main subjects dealt with on your website and keep in mind what someone looking for your page might search.

The categories will generally be 1, 2 or 3 words.

For example:

•  if you are a 24 hour locksmith - your customer will find you if you use "locksmith" as a category and not "24 hour service"
•  if you own a beach front hotel your customer will find you if you use "hotel" and not "ocean views".

DO NOT USE YOUR LOCATION AS A CATEGORY. You will have a separate place to state your location so do not waste one of your 3 categories by writing something that will already be shown on your listing.

DO NOT CRAM AS MANY CATEGORIES AS POSSIBLE IN EACH BOX. Do not use a category such as "hotel and ocean views and restaurant and pizza and breakfast".

For example, an SEO and Website Marketing company used:

• business • organic marketing • seo • email marketing •

A better choice for the first category may have been technology, though business fits too.

Another good example for a Home tiling company:

• home and garden • ceramic wall tiler • floor tiler • ceramic tiles •

A website directory webpage:

• technology • seo • website directories • website promotion •

A fire and flood restoration company:

• services • restoration • fire damage repair • flood damage repair •

You can see how the primary and  3 additional categories for these listings really give you a good idea what these websites are about. In fact, by reading just the categories alone without any further description you have a good idea what the website is all about.

This is one of the great advantages of our directory over many of the common website directories. You can see that if these listings were limited to just a primary category, a lot of useful information would be lacking and people looking for that type of website might not find it.

It would be nice if you added on the page that the Category #2-4 values must be 42 characters or fewer in length. I filled out the form, then only after submitting was told it wouldn't be accepted and to click my back button, at which point all my other field values had been erased.

Iya Matthew... are you serious??? If you can't create a directory listing for your own website how can you call yourself a complete internet solution?

I am having trouble registering, as Category 2,3,4 does not have the option to choose from the list, even though it says at submitting, that you can not register unless you choose a category fromt 'the list'

I wish you could change the limit of 3 additional categories to more - maybe 6?? I reviewed other similar listings and found over 6 that are appropriate. Is this possible in the future?
