Thank author of this post/comment

There may be an art to writing titles, but we think you'll find it quite easy with these guide lines. Keep in mind that a title has to satisfy two objectives:

  1. It needs to give a human reader a quick overview of what was writing and interest them in reading it.
  2. It needs to offer the search engines "keywords", or "concepts" of what the article is about.

Your titles should be of reasonable length, not 2 or 3 words, but not a long sentence either. A question often makes a good title.

Here are a few examples of bad titles:

  • HTML
    • Problem: too short
    • Problem: too ambiguous (there are only 6 billion search results in Google for HTML).
    • Problem: Not interesting to anyone
    • Good Title: Online HTML Course Offers Insight on HTML vs XHTML
This title would offer both human readers and search engines an interesting idea about the post.
  • New Spectacular Mystery Exposed with Great Fan Fare!
    • Length: Good
    • Problem: maybe interesting to a person, but gives no insight about the post
    • Problem: excessive adjectives
    • Problem: no keywords or concepts for the search engines
    • Good Title: Scientists Find Mystery in Arenal Volcano Eruption
Again interesting to people and useful for search engines.
  • Life enriching travel
    • Problem: Short (but does give some interest and concepts)
    • Problem: 'travel' extremely ambiguous (2 billion results in Google)
    • Good title: Life Enriching Travel; You Can Build Houses and Teach Kids
This was easy! A sentence from the post worked right into the title. Take care the title doesn't get too long or repetitive. The Title should NOT simply be an arbitrary sentence form the post.
  • Can It Still Be Restored?
    • Problem: What is "it"?
    • Good title: Can Acapulco Still Be Restored?
Specifying the "it" changes this from a mysterious title to one that meets our human and search engine needs

Additionally, a url (link) should never be used in a title, and the name of a website is also a poor choice.

Here are a few examples of good titles:

  • Temporary Housing for North Dakota Job Seekers
  • Which companies are a good investment?
  • Information Needed on Phone Handset Replacement
  • How to Secure a Driver's License in Uruguay
  • Grow Your Social Media Community Through Karmaback
  • Business Partners Looking For Furniture Shops
  • How To Avoid Unproductive Employees

I think it's easy to see how these titles offer an overview / interest to human readers and keywords / concepts to the search engines.

Keep these tips in mind when writing a title on any of our websites.
